Kenbu, a traditional Japanese stage art, masterfully combines the use of a Katana (the iconic Japanese sword) and a traditional fan, all while embodying the spirit and poetry of the Samurai.

Located in Kyoto, our workshop offers an authentic Samurai experience. Here, at our dojo (training gym), you can don the traditional attire used in Kenbu performances, learn the art of handling a Japanese sword and fan, and embrace the Samurai way in a fun and interactive manner.

Our Samurai experiences are just a short distance from Kyoto Downtown, offering easy access for travelers. In the cozy ambiance of our studio, we accommodate smaller groups of up to 12 participants. Or, at a traditional temple near the studio, sign up for a private experience and immerse yourself in Bushido in a more historically authentic setting.

02Immerse in Samurai Culture with the Art of Kenbu

The term 'Samurai' evokes a range of imagery, most commonly that of valiant warriors of ancient battlefields. Yet, beyond their martial prowess, the Samurai, during their 700-year reign from the late Heian to the Edo era, cultivated a distinct culture and aesthetic. 'Kenbu' is an artistic expression of the Samurai's unique sense of beauty. Our workshop is dedicated to offering you a glimpse into the Samurai's soul and elegance through the art of Kenbu.

In our class, participants will develop essential sword-handling skills. As part of the Full lesson, there is an added dimension of incorporating the folding fan, an element integral to the aesthetics and techniques of samurai tradition. This is combined with swordsmanship and fundamental footwork. The course culminates with a performance of Kenbu, a dance that captures the essence of samurai poise and grace, all while echoing the rhythm of traditional Japanese poetry. 03Expert Guidance by Kenbu Masters

Our Samurai Kenbu Theater Kyoto workshop is led by seasoned instructors, each holding the prestigious title of 'Kenbu Master' from renowned kenbu schools such as Seigaryu Kenbu School, Shoten-Shindoryu Kenbu School, and Hokushin-ryu Kenbu School. Their extensive training at these distinguished institutions ensures that even within the brief span of our workshops, you will engage with the art of Kenbu both safely and authentically.

As a finale to the workshop, your instructor, trained in one of these esteemed schools, will showcase their expertise in a spirited performance. Prepare to be captivated by the precision and passion of the Kenbu Master's artistry, honed in the rich traditions of their respective schools.

04Attire and Photographic Memories

Step into the authentic garb of the Samurai at our Kyoto Samurai Kenbu Workshop, where we offer a diverse collection of Kimonos and Hakamas – the very same used in true Kenbu performances. Our selection ranges from the traditional striped formal Hakama to the ornate gold-brocaded versions, as well as attire designed for martial arts practice. Choose the style that speaks to you, with our gold-brocaded Hakama being a popular choice for those looking for an extra touch of splendor.

After you're dressed, we’ve set aside time for you to capture the moment. Our instructor will guide you through a series of dynamic Samurai poses to ensure your photos are as striking as the culture you’re stepping into. Remember to bring your camera or smartphone to freeze this moment in time!
